Surrealist Czech artist and animator, Jan Švankmajer, takes on a loose adaptation of Lewis Carroll’s fantasy, Alice in Wonderland. Alice, Švankmajer’s first feature film, is a stark contrast from the popularized Disney animation. In this dark, surrealist intepretation, Alice chases the white rabbit into an alternate world where she is surrounded by living inanimate objects and taxidermy animals. Švankmajer’s early career in puppet theatre is made evident as he marries live-action and stop-motion animations to create a visually distinctive, tactile world.
