Sign on for a live artist-led tutorial on experimenting with craft and design processes using recycled materials found at home. During this fun and informal workshop, artist and MAD Artist Studios alum Elodie Blanchard will guide participants in painting with watercolor to express and process emotions.

MAD’s Digital Drop-Ins are for participants of all ages, backgrounds, and skill levels. Following the demonstration, participants will have time to independently work on their project and share with “neighbors” in the virtual class.

All Digital Drop-ins will be 45 minutes. Registrants will receive an email 24 hours in advance of the program with instructions for accessing the workshop on Zoom.

Suggested materials

• Paper: thicker paper like watercolor paper is best, but copy paper, cardboard, recycled paper will also work
• Gouache or watercolor paint: if you don’t have paint, look in your kitchen for food coloring, tea bags, coffee grounds, spices… you can paint with these instead! You can also make your own watercolor before the class using materials from your kitchen.
• Paintbrushes: if you don’t have a brush, Q-tips, old toothbrushes, or paper towels will work. Or make your own brush at home.
  
• Black pen: ideally with a few different thicknesses
• Hairdryer or handheld fan to help speed up the paint drying process. (Optional)

About the artist

Elodie Blanchard works at the intersection of fiber art, performance, and design. Known for her textile designs, large-scale fiber sculptures and installations, and costume-driven performances, Blanchard uses humor and joy in complicated and perhaps deceptive ways, inviting the viewer to participate in a serious kind of play. Through material exploration, repurposing, and a near meditative process of repetition, she transforms the discarded and the commonplace into fantastical objects and playful environments that give us permission to explore our ambiguous relationship to nature, to others, and to ourselves. Blanchard studied sculpture at l’Ecole Supérieure des Beaux-Arts de Paris, fashion at l’Ecole des Arts Appliqués Duperré, and performance at CalArts. She established her design studio in 2005.
